Aproximaciones a la frontera hispano-portuguesa a través de las artes visuales: tres casos de empleo del “Border Art” como herramienta de investigación (1)

    In this work we present key concepts for the study of borders in general, focusing on the Spanish-Portuguese border, through contemporary art. The final objective is to contribute to multidisciplinarity in the discipline of Border Studies using art produced in and on borders as a method, which means thinking and accepting artistic practice as research. To do this, we first situate ourselves in a chronology that maps the paradigm shift in border studies to its interest in cultural productions and we will define the basic characteristics of “border art.” Subsequently, we analyz three artistic projects carried out in the last two decades by artists who grew up living the consequences of the Schengen Agreement, so that we observe how new imaginaries are drawn around the Single European Area. At the same time, based on interviews with the authors and other written texts, we collect their motivations for approaching the border, the narratives and discourses they deploy, and the creation processes they carried out. In the onclusions, we verify that the artists contribute valuable reflections to the current debates on the Iberian borders through their works, from other formats and other motivations other than those of academics, building their own language of inquiry.

    En este trabajo presentamos conceptos clave para el estudio sobre fronteras en general, y sobre la frontera hispano-portuguesa en particular, a través del arte contemporáneo. El objetivo final es contribuir a la multidisciplinariedad en el área de los Border Studies utilizando el arte producido en y sobre fronteras como método, lo que significa pensar y aceptar la práctica artística como investigación. Para ello, primero nos situamos en una cronología que mapea el cambio de paradigma en los estudios fronterizos hasta su interés por las producciones culturales y definiremos las características básicas del “border art”. Posteriormente analizamos tres proyectos artísticos realizados en las últimas dos décadas por artistas que crecieron viviendo las consecuencias del Acuerdo de Schengen, de forma que observamos cómo se dibujan nuevos imaginarios en torno al Espacio Único Europeo. Al mismo tiempo, a partir de entrevistas con los autores y otros textos escritos, recogemos sus motivaciones para acercarse a la frontera, las narrativas y discursos que despliegan y los procesos de creación que llevaron a cabo. En las conclusiones, comprobamos que los artistas contribuyen con valiosas reflexiones a los debates actuales sobre las fronteras ibéricas a través de sus obras, desde otros formatos y otras motivaciones distintas a las de los académicos, construyendo un lenguaje propio de indagación.
