In this paper, we examine a comparative reading between Marius the Epicurean, by Walter Pater (1839-1894), and The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde (1854-1900). The novels belong to the English aestheticism of the end of the 19th century, which exalted the ideal of beauty as primordial quality above morality (Funke, 1972). We will examine the similarities of both titles with the main characteristics of the Bildungsroman, with special attention to the transformations that both heros suffer. We will observe how, in a serch of self-discovery, Marius y Dorian found a new way to see the world around them (Arango Rodríguez, 2009). Specifically, we intend to analyze how the typical mentors of the Bildungsroman are characterized and in which way the thoughts and ideologies of Flavio and Lord Henry Wotton influence in Marius and Dorian. Besides, we interest to approach the influence of the classical tradition in the two pedagogies, as well as the recovery that Wilde realizes of the guidelines of Pater: we will examine how the hedonism and the epicureanism affect the young characters. In this way, our research will focus on how the classical source impacts the aesthetic model in the aforementioned novels from the perspectives defended by Pater and Wilde.
