El Cabildo era el supremo organismo administrativo de la isla, que poseía competencias en todas las cuestiones políticas de gobierno, excepto en loconcerniente al ámbito militar y eclesiástico; con cuyas instituciones colaboraba sóloen algunos aspectos concretos.En las islas pertenecientes al Señorío de Canarias los primeros cabildos seinstituyeron en el siglo XV bajo las directrices emanadas de la legislación castellanay se mantuvieron vigentes hasta el siglo XIX.El cabildo de Lanzarote estaba compuesto por la justicia y el regimiento, cuyosmiembros eran elegidos por los señores entre la élite insular, a los que se añadía elsíndico personero general, de libre elección entre los vecinos. Esta corporación regíalos destinos de la población insular, con funciones que abarcaban el ámbito civil, lajusticia y administración local.
