    Amato Lusitano, como tantos otros médicos de su tiempo, se ocupa de una de las llamadas «enfermedades nuevas»: el morbo gálico, y parte de sus escritos se incluye en una colección de textos médicos sobre la enfermedad editada en Venecia en 1566. El estudio de las curationes de sus Centuriae referidas a esta afección muestra que a Amato le interesa más el tratamiento, la vertiente práctica de la afección, los recursos terapéuticos (guayaco, raíz de China, unciones mercuriales), que el estudio teórico, como podría ser la tipificación de la enfermedad o la discusión sobre el nombre. Aun así, no falta el conocimiento erudito que se deja ver en su particular manejo y crítica de las autoridades médicas contemporáneas.

    Amatus Lusitanus, like many other physicians in the 16th Century, deals with one of the so-called «new diseases»: the French disease. Several parts of his writings are included in a collection of medical texts about the illness published in Venice in 1566. The study of the curationes of his Centuriae related to this disease reveals that Amatus was more interested in the treatment, the practicas content of the illness and the therapeutic resources (guaiac, China root, mercury anointments) rather than theory, such as the categorization of the disease or the discussion about its name. Nevertheless, an enormous erudition is clearly shown through his extraordinary knowledge and his critical point of view of the medical authorities of his time.
