In the context of disputes and quests for advancements in education, public policies for teacher education emerge, such as PIBID, aiming to contribute to the initial education of teachers, improvements in basic education, and the valorization of the teaching profession. The objective of this work was to investigate the perspectives on teacher education present in the program's calls for proposals and briefly narrate its history. The manuscript was constructed from the documentary analysis of the decree that established the program, the public call of 2007 during the Lula government, and the calls for proposals of 2018 and 2020 during the Temer and Bolsonaro governments, respectively. Through the conducted analyses, it was found that PIBID is a potential program to contribute to teacher education. However, there are some reservations that we need to pay attention to so that this education can be, within the possibilities, integral.
