  • Resumen
    • Taking as a starting point the language dynamics of the past developed by the authors of this volume, the Epilogue reflects on three main focal points which relate to the language dynamics of today. First, it develops a critical assessment of the European Union's current political and cultural project on linguistic diversity and multilingualism, as a paradigmatic case study. Second, it brings to this debate a comparative view, by taking into account the practices and complex geographic linguistics of the Early Modern Age. Finally, it considers the manner in which the linguistic dynamics of the past, preceding the affirmation of mono-linguistic principles of national states, can offer critical instruments to orient current policies intended to sustain multilingualism. In the light of recent EU cultural policies that have defined multilingualism and the safeguarding of linguistic diversity as pillars of the European project, the need to explore the history of the continent's multilingual past is more pressing than ever. History textbooks, as well as history museums, represent an extraordinary vehicle for the formation of a historical sensitivity that would offer a context for current policies on linguistic issues beyond specific national horizons.
