    Las ciudades históricas españolas, importantecomponente de la tradición viajera, han reaparecidocomo destinos turísticos en los últimos años, debidoa múltiples factores, tanto internos como externos,relacionados con las especiales características quepresenta el turismo en España.La ciudad histórica constituye un destino turísticotradicional pero, durante décadas, ha estadoeclipsada por la preponderancia del turismo de sol yplaya. En la actualidad, estos destinos vanposicionándose, siendo importante conocer cuálesson las relaciones que se establecen entre losvisitantes y la ciudad histórica.El objetivo de esta presentación es, por tanto,ofrecer una panorámica del uso que los visitantesrealizan de la ciudad histórica, estableciendo laclasificación de los mismos, en función de una seriede características (procedencia, tiempo de estancia,lugares visitados, etc.). A partir de esta clasificaciónse puede conocer el comportamiento de cadatipología y su relación con la ciudad, identificandolos itinerarios realizados y lugares visitados. Delmismo modo, se trata de conocer en que medida lavisita de la ciudad histórica responde a un interés ocreación personal del visitante o viene derivada deuna oferta comercial.El trabajo se organiza con un tratamiento generaldel tema y la referencia a casos concretosrepresentativos de las ciudades históricas españolas.

    The Spanish historical cities are an important part ofthe traveling tradition. They have reappeared astourist destinations in the last years, due to internal and external factors, linked to the special characteristics shown by tourist activity in Spain now.The historical cities are traditional tourist destinations in Spain but during decades they have beeneclipsed by the preponderancy of the “sun and beachtourism”. Nowadays these destinations are getting abetter position so it is important to know the relationship established between the visitors and thehistorical city.Taking into account the new situation, the aim ofthis paper is to offer an overview of the use of thecity made by the visitors to the historical cities andto classify them, according to some characteristics(point of departure, length of the stay, places visited, etc.). From this classification it is possible toknow the types of visitors and their connectionswith the city, recognizing the itineraries made andthe places visited. The idea is also to identify if thetourist visit to the historical city is the result of apersonal choice of the visitor or it is derived from acommercial supply.The work is presented with a general approach tothe subject and reference to some representativecase studies of the Spanish historical cities.
