In this paper we analyse the material and festive uses of the dresses and fabrics associated with the vicereine in the festivities for the birth of Felipe Próspero in Mexico City (1658). In this sumptuous account we distinguish four festive spaces and circumstances: the cathedral, the palace, the grave mask at night and the bulls. The most common fabrics are chamelote, cloth and satin, and in all cases, the splendour of the jewels and the ice-tips as a complement and adornment of the costume is evident. The vicereine’s costume is visually framed within the festive performance and reveals the encapsulated ostentation inherent to her feminine agency, aligning herself in the closed spaces that represent her and within the noble lineage in which she participates.
