    • Early years Science is in reality STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)in action in play. Hands on science starts withplay. Play is what children do from their earliestyears. It is children’s work. Play is a crucial stagein a child’s learning journey and is anapprenticeship for adulthood. Play in children isnot ‘Just playing’. Play is where a child chosesto interact with an activity which is Hands-on,hence science, STEM. Understanding beginsfrom earliest days and is Minds- On. Beginningwith observation identifying that with which theywill interact, and then with interaction is alsoHands-on, hence a STEM experience, STEM-E,which follow the sequence of actionssummarised in the STEM Play Cycle Play is ongoing. It is progressive, developing with practiceand age and occurs wherever the child’s interestis’ caught’.
