Portrait of the Bilateral Interpretation Through the Analysis of a Scene From the Series Game of Thrones

    This paper analyses the role of the bilateral interpreter in a negotiation that takes place in the third episode of the third season of Game of Thrones. We will base our analysis on some remarks expressed by different authors and on the presence of an ethical code. The objective is to verify if the representation of the interpreting process and of the interpreter is accurate or not in a fictional context like a television series. First, we will offer an historical overview of interpreting and we will talk about the bilateral technique, and we will also offer a short overview of interpreting in audiovisual products. Then, we will describe some aspects of interpreting that will be analysed later and we will contextualize the interpretation to carry out the analysis. In the end we will provide some conclusions that will allow us to verify if the audiovisual products reflect the interpreting reality or if certain creative freedom is taken.

    O presente traballo analiza o papel da persoa intérprete bilateral nunha negociación ficticia que acontece no terceiro capítulo da terceira temporada da serie Game of Thrones. Basearemos a nosa análise en aspectos estudados por autores e autoras e na suxeición a un código deontolóxico. O noso obxectivo é comprobar como se representa a interpretación e a persoa intérprete nun contexto ficticio como é unha serie televisiva. Para introducir a cuestión ofreceremos primeiro unha visión histórica xeral da interpretación e comentaremos a técnica de interpretación bilateral, ademais da presenza da interpretación nos produtos audiovisuais. Logo, describiremos algúns aspectos que analizaremos máis adiante e poñeremos en contexto a interpretación para levar a cabo a nosa análise. Finalmente achegaremos unha serie de conclusións que nos permitirán reflexionar sobre se este produto audiovisual reflicte a realidade da profesión interpretativa.
