    Es un largo periodo de tiempo el que se lleva reconociendo en diferentes marcos internacionales la importancia de la educación y la investigación para el desarrollo humano y social; desde la Declaración de Estocolmo de 1972 en los principios 19 y 20 hasta la Declaración de Lima de 2009 o la Conferencia Mundial sobre Educación Superior-2009 titulada: la nueva dinámica de la educación superior y la investigación para el cambio y el desarrollo. En esta última se reconoce que en la época que vivimos la inversión en estudios superiores es fundamental, por ser una de las principales acciones que ayudan a la construcción de sociedades integradoras y fomentan la investigación; experiencias de los últimos años, no dejan lugar a dudas de que las universidades desde su labor docente e investigadora contribuyen a erradicar la pobreza, a favorecer eldesarrollo sostenible y, ayudan a avanzar en el logro de los objetivos de desarrollo acordados internacionalmente, como por ejemplo, los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio (ODM) y de la Educación para Todos (EPT). Será necesario definir estrategias que, ayuden al desarrollo de investigaciones internacionales en las que se afronten asuntos que afecten al bien estar de las sociedades y fomentar la formación de equipos internacionales de investigación. Ahora bien, las estrategias nos beneficien a todos será necesario que respeten los principios de equidad en materia de acceso y de resultados, promuevan la calidad y respeten la diversidad cultural.Dentro del marco definido, se plantea: repasar a lo largo del tiempo cómo contribuye y se reconoce a nivel internacional la investigación como motor del desarrollo humano y social, y difundir las aportaciones de las investigaciones realizadas por nuestro equipo.

    The importance of education and research regarding human and social development has been acknowledged since long in different international environments, ranging from the Stockholm Declaration of 1971, in particular in its principles 19 and 20, to the Worldwide Conference on Higher Education of 2009 held under the overarching theme The New Dynamics of Higher Education and Research for Societal Change and Development. As a matter of fact, this latteracknowledges that, specially in these times, investment in higher education becomes paramount, since it is one of the main actions that help to build an integrative society and to promote research. There are many experiences during the last years that leave no room for doubt that through their teaching activity and research universities help to eradicate poverty, foster sustainable development and give steps forward towards the achievement of the internationally agreed upon development objectives, for example, the so-called Millennium Development Goals and Education for All. Therefore, there is a need to define strategies that, on the one hand help to implement international research initiatives dealing with issues relating to society welfare,and on the other hand help to increase the number of international research teams. Nevertheless, if we really wish those strategies be beneficial for all of us, they should comply with equity principles regarding both access and results, foster quality and respect cultural diversity. Within the framework previously defined, this paper has a double objective: to review the contribution made by research to human and social development along time, and to spread the contributions from the research carried out by our team within this area.
