From a qualitative research of a documentary nature, using the bibliography as an instrument, this article took as a field the short story Negrinha, by Monteiro Lobato (1920). This short story has racism as its central theme, but it also brings, as a background, the relationships in the family context and, in some way, the post-abolition labor relations. However, the article took as an object of analysis the act of 'playing' as a vanishing point and motive for the life of the main character of the tale, Negrinha. From the analysis of this aspect, based on theoretical references from the social sciences, it can be said that 'playing', in the story, appears as an instance of affirmation of life without which life would not be justified.

A partir de uma pesquisa qualitativa de cunho documental, com utilização da bibliografia como instrumento, toma-se como campo o conto Negrinha, obra de Monteiro Lobato (1920). O conto tem como tema central o racismo, mas também traz como plano de fundo as relações no contexto familiar e, de alguma forma, as relações trabalhistas pós-abolição. Porém, toma-se como objeto de análise “o brincar” como ponto de fuga e móbil para o viver da personagem principal do conto, Negrinha. A partir da análise desse aspecto, alicerçados em referenciais teóricos das ciências sociais, pode-se dizer que “o brincar”, no conto, figura como uma instância de afirmação da vida sem o qual a vida não se justificaria.
