  • Resumen
    • According to the reference works, Spanish relative adverb adonde, appears only headed by a movement verb, as well as in the following constructions: firstly, heading a relative with a hanging topic; secondly, as the complement of a preposition introducing the relative, and thirdly, in cleft sentences. Nevertheless, together with these constructions, oral corpora such as CORLEC and CREA display other uses previously unaccounted for. The proportion and diversity of cases without verb of movement indicates that this semantic constraint, described for the written language, is not verified in oral Spanish. Besides, when a movement verb appears, significant differences are also found according to its position (in the subordinate or in the main clause). Finally, corpus data show that relative subordinate clauses with adonde are more syntactically diverse than previously described, since they can appear in constructions with two prepositions, prepositional objects, and verbless clauses, among others.
