This paper aims to trace the use of the Spanish polysemous idiom echar leña/aceite al fuego in order to study its meaning through time. To do so, classical (Latin, Greek and Biblical) precedents of this idiom are examined, as well as its appearance in Spanish textual corpora from different periods. As a means to explain cognitive operations that conditioned the genesis and evolution of the meaning of this idiom, the embodied cognition thesis and the Invited Inferencing Theory of Semantic Change are taken into consideration.
