The present paper aims to comment on some of the cognitive-pragmatic mechanisms involvedin the decoding and interpretation of socio-political graphic humor. Firstly, attention is paid to the characteristics of press cartoons as a multimodal and humorous discourse genre.Afterwards, the paper discusses the possibilities of their description using the main analyticaltools of a recent genre-specific model that provides a satisfying theoretical approachfor the study of their humorous-critical messages. Finally, the aforementioned method isillustrated by applying it to the analysis of the examples of two multimodal press cartoons, which have been extracted from Spanish digital newspapers and dedicated to current socio-political issues.
