Resumen
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the representation of the Argentinian dirty war in the trilogy La fragilitat de la memòria, by the Argentinian-Catalan writer Victoria Szpunberg, performed for the first time during 2008 and 2010. Unlike most of the works addressing this subject from a dramatic viewpoint, Szpunberg’s texts do not intendto represent the facts from the victims’ or the victimisers’ perspective. They are narrated from the perspective of those who did not endure directly the violation of their civil liberties and human rights, but who were the next generation of the direct victims of political violence and grew up re-traumatized by the horror stories told by their parents. Thisrefreshing, critical look at the past allows Szpunberg not only to question the hegemonic narrative within post-dictatorship collective memory in Argentina, but also to discuss the ethical and esthetical possibilities of representing an abysmal fact through fictionfrom a temporal distance and from the cultural crisis that results from having grown up in Catalonia with her parents in exile. Therefore, although our analysis is based on a particular and very specific case, it is an inquiry about the legitimacy of discussing horror from a fictional or academic perspective, by those who have not endured it. If we get a positive answer, then we will address the question of how to do it without betraying the referent that we intend to represent and understand. In the end, these are the questions that Szpunberg poses to the audience and we make our own.
