    El establecimiento de la Compañía de Jesús en las principales villas comerciales del País Vasco fue complejo y conflictivo. En este trabajo se reflexiona en torno a este proceso en Bilbao, en un contexto de disidencia entre el Cabildo eclesiástico y el Regimiento en torno al patronazgo de las iglesias. Diezmos, presentación de clérigos, capital social y control de los símbolos de la parroquialidad fueron elementos fundamentales en el desarrollo de las estrategias de poder de las elites urbanas. Los jesuitas fueron vistos como una amenaza.

    The establishment of the Company of Jesus in the main commercial towns of the Basque Country was a complex and conflictive process. The aim of this paper is to address this issue in Bilbao, in a context of dissent between the ecclesiastical Council and the Regiment around the patronage of the churches. Tithes, the presentation of the clergy, social capital, and the control of the parochiality symbols, were fundamental elements in developing strategies that guaranteed the power of urban elites. The Jesuits were seen as a threat.
