Microbial counts were performed on faeces from piglets in intensive production conditions, in order to check the adaptation of microbial digesta to weaning. Piglets were weaned at 21 days of life, and samples were taken 5 and 19 days after weaning. Lactose positive enterobacteria, Escherichia coli, lactic acid bacteria, Streptococcus and anaerobic bacteria were counted by conventional culture techniques that were proven to be effective in monitoring postweaning microbiological changes in pigs.
