  • A sampling of organs subject to confiscation by the sanitary inspection in an ovine slaughterhouse, both sheep and lambs, in the province of Madrid (Spain) has been conducted over a year. Samples were processed to determine the final diagnosis and the etiology of such diseases. The sheep pathologies found in slaughterhouses are few in number and very dependent on the age of the animal, being very varied in etiology. Diseases that stood out for its high prevalence were found to be parasitic tapeworm processes as cysticercosis and hydatidosis and mixed bacterial infections as enzootic pneumonia in lambs and sheep. Basic pathological, bacteriological and parasitological diagnostic techniques have been found useful in the detection of diseases and are a help to better understand the health status of the national livestock in order to take measures to control the disease and reduce slaughterhouse condemnations. Pathological examination has proved to be sufficient for the diagnosis of parasitic diseases like hydatidosis or cysticercosis but specific parasitological techniques have been required for the detection of trematodes. The basic bacteriological techniques have been useful in the detection of the etiologic agents of several diseases such as enzootic pneumonia, caseous lymphadenitis or liver and lung abscesses.
