    • The susceptibility of other species to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) grows when some sectors of the European Union raises the possibility of lifting the ban on feeding pigs and poultry with animal meal. Moreover, the use of pigs as graft donor could cause concern, given a report of Creutzfeld-jacob variant (vCJD) in the recipient of a porcine dura mater graft. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) can be experimentally produced in swine by inoculating infected material by several routes simultaneously 3 groups of 7 pigs, were inoculated with 2 atypical scrapie strains and the agent of BSE passaged in sheep (BSEs). Animals were under clinical observation. Western blot, histopathology and immunohistochemistry was performed to confirm the diagnosis. Clinical sings compatible with TSE, vacuolar changes and several pattern if immunopositivity were identified in different regions of the brain from affected pigs. Different neuropathology was observed between pigs infected by the atypical scrapie and BSEs agent. This study confirms that the susceptibility of pigs to TSE and the high pathogenicity of the BSEs agent demonstrated in mice model. The aim of the work will be the determination of the pig neuropathology associated to this kind of prion infection.
