Resumen
The aim of this study was to describe the morphological, productive and welfare traits of an experimental flock of Chamarita sheep and the effect of the coat colour on these traits. The Chamarita is an endangered native breed from La Rioja (Spain) producing a quality brand meat. We studied 50 adult ewes and 45 lamb. Ewes’ weight, body length, height at withers and thorax circumference were measured. The physiological stress response was assessed in blood samples. Social behaviour was registered analysing aggressive and affiliative interactions. Each ewe was subjected to a cognitive test (T-maze). The ewes’ prolificity and the birth weight (BW) average daily gain (ADG) during the milking period and weaning weight of their lambs were registered. A total of 20 lambs were selected for carcass and meat quality evaluation, 10 of them as suckling lambs and 10 fattened to light Ternasco type. Data were analysed using the GLM procedure of SAS. We found differences between animals of different colour in the number of aggressive interactions, and in BW and ADG of their lambs. The carcass and meat quality measurements demonstrated a product close to the quality traits of a typical sucking lamb meat.
