Resumen de “Donde todos los sentidos hallan su objeto”: Materialidad, puesta en escena y comunicación política en los convites al almirante de Inglaterra (Valladolid, 1605)

A partir de una lectura atenta de cuatro fuentes escritas, este artículo reconstruye la materialidad de la puesta en escena de dos banquetes vallisoletanos ofrecidos en 1605 respectivamente por el VI condestable de Castilla y el duque de Lerma a la comitiva del conde de Nottingham. Los eventos que aparecen reconstruidos a través del cruce de estas cuatro perspectivas textuales –contrastadas con otras fuentes como inventarios, objetos y espacios– permiten recrear el ambiente inmersivo propio de este tipo de eventos, en los que los diferentes estímulos sensoriales se combinan entre sí para captar la atención de los invitados. En ambos banquetes, la cuidadosa modulación de los estímulos permitió a cada anfitrión formular mensajes relativos a su estatus, ambiciones y experiencia individual, en un contexto marcado por la nueva relación con Inglaterra y el júbilo por el nacimiento de un heredero de la corona española.

Based on a close reading of four written sources, this articlereconstructs the materiality of the staging of two banquets in Valladolid offered in 1605 respectively by the 6th Constable of Castile and the Duke of Lerma to theEnglish embassy of the Earl of Nottingham. The eventsreconstructed through the cross-referencing of these fourtextual perspectives –combined with other preserved sources such as inventories, objects and spaces– allow usto recreate the immersive atmosphere typical of this typeof event, in which the different sensory stimuli combinewith each other to capture the attention of the guests. In the case of these two festive banquets, the careful modulation of stimuli allowed each host to formulate messages related to his status, ambitions and individual experience, in the context of the new relationship with England and the jubilation over the birth of an heir to the Spanish crown.
