Perdonar al toro

    ¿qué sucede cuando se perdona a un toro? El arte del toreo, en la definición de Domingo Ortega, es “una cosa muy compleja”. También el perdón, señala Ricoeur, es no sólo difícil de pedir y de conceder sino, sobre todo, de pensar. ¿Qué quiere decir, entonces, que la “asimetría ontológica” que el toreo evidencia pueda ser resuelta no sólo en la muerte sino por la vía del perdón? Pensar en el perdón —el indulto— que se concede al toro amenaza así con ser una empresa difícil por partida doble. Siguiendo a Pérez Oramas, Bataille, y Kojève, queremos sugerir que el indulto que se le concede al toro es una especie de acción sacrificial (y, por ello, “originaria”) en la cual el hombre reconoce, si no su continuidad con la “oscuridad animal” a la que refiere Bataille, al menos su estar-en-el-límite de la frontera que separa (y, por consiguiente, une) animalidad y humanidad.

    What happens when a bull is pardoned in the arena? The art of bullfighting, accordingto Domingo Ortega’s definition, is “a very complex thing.” Forgiveness is also complex:as Ricoeur argued, if forgiveness is difficult to give and to receive “it is just as difficult toconceive of”. What does it mean, then, that this “ontologic asymmetry” bullfightingmakes evident can be solved not only through death but also through forgiveness?Understanding the pardon —the indulto— the bull can be granted is then a venture thatseems to be difficult twice over. Following Pérez Oramas, Bataille, and Kojève, wewant to suggest this pardoning of the bull is a kind of sacrificial action (and, hence, an“originary” one) in which man recognizes if not his own continuity with the “animaldarkness” Bataille refers to, at least its being-in-the-limit of the border that separates(and, hence, unites) animality and humanity.
