The aim of this paper is to show the complexity of Quevedo’s reading of Stoicism, as a representative of the Hispanic Baroque, in the context of the history of the reception of this ancient school in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. To this end, we take up P. F. Moreau’s thesis on the three great stages in the history of the reception of Stoicism (humanist, neo-Stoic and modern critical phases) with the aim of providing new arguments, extracted from the analysis of the fear of death and the fear of God in La cuna y la sepultura, which allow us to specify what singular position Quevedo occupies, as a representative of Christianised Neostoicism, in the context of these three great phases mentioned above.
