    • Progesterone and estradiol play an important role in sperm function, especially in sperm capacitation, and these actions are likely receptor mediated. We have previously shown the presence of estrogen receptor (ER) in ram spermatozoa, with three different inmunotypes. However, there are no reports on progesterone receptor (PR) in this species. Given that capacitation and the acrosome reaction involve sperm membrane changes and molecular redistribution, it can be hypothesized that the receptor distribution of these hormones can be modified. Thus, in this study we investigated the presence of progesterone receptor (PR) in ram spermatozoa, and analyzed the distribution of both PR and ER in different physiological states associated with ram sperm capacitation. Using immuno fluoresce techniques, we identified for the first time PR in ram spermatozoa, located in the equatorial region. Moreover, our results showed that PR distribution remained independent of the samples’ capacitation state. However, ER distribution varied depending on the capacitation state. A high positive correlation between the presence of ER in the acrosomal apical zone and the rate of non-capacitated spermatozoa (r=0.848; P<0.001) was found. These results suggest that ER could be involved in ram sperm capacitation.
