Resumen
- In total, 480 Lohmann Brown egg-laying hens were used in this study. During the rearing phase the pullets were fed 6 different feeding programs; two of them differed in the main cereal used (corn vs. barley) and the remaining 4 formed a 2x2 factorial with 2 fiber sources (straw and sugar beet pulp) at 2 levels of inclusion (2 and 4%).The fiber sources were included in the corn diets (3 periods) at expense (wt:wt) of the whole diet. During the laying period (17-40 wk of age), hens were fed a diet with 2.650 or 2.750 kcal AMEn/kg and with similar indispensable AA content per kcal of AMEn. The experimental design was completely randomized with 12 treatments arranged as a 6x2 factorial with 6 rearing feeding programs (3 periods) and 2 laying diets. Type of diet used during the rearing period did not affect hen performance during the laying period. Layers fed the high energy diet ate less feed (P < 0,001) and had better FCR (P < 0, 01) than hens fed the low energy diet. However, energy content of the layer diet did not affect egg rate, egg weight, or BW change of the hens. The use of a high energy diet during the laying period did not affect egg rate or egg weight as compared with the use a low of energy diet. It is concluded that the inclusion of fiber in the rearing diets had little effect on performance of the hens during the laying period. Also, the AMEn concentration of the diet will depend on the relative cost of available ingredients.
