Eight primiparous lactating sows were used to assess the effect of protein (15 vs. 12% CP) and fibre (18 vs. 22% NDF) levels on gas emissions (NH3, N2O AND CH4) in a factorial crossed-over design (36 days of lactation, 9 days each phase). Sows provided 15% CP and 18% NDF showed greater feed intake than the rest (P<0.05), but their live-weight and backfat thickness did not differ among treatments (P>0.10). Only environmental NH3 emission was reduced by decreasing dietary CP level (P<0.10) while N2O and CH4 were least affected (P>0.10).
