Implementing student-centered learning programs in University settings is often difficult. A web-based software was developed to describe the life cycle of a dairy cow and used to simulate a dairy farm. Within a class, each student has its own unique farm defined at random within limits determined by the instructor. Actions taken by students include: heat detection, insemination, drying off, diet specifications, formation of groups and transfer of animals between groups, colostrum and milk feeding, weaning, treatment of diseases, milk withdrawal if antibiotics are used, heat synchronization (hormonal), buying and culling of cows or heifers, etc. The daily output provides information on production and economic performance as feedback for students, and grading is provided to students on-line. Exercises on designing facilities, developing a manure management programs or agricultural planning can also be implemented. The program has been used by students in several Veterinary and Agricultural School around the world with excellent evaluations. In a non-planned exam conducted 2 weeks prior to the final exam, students were 5 times more likely to respond correctly to the same type of questions about dairy cows than other species taught in the same semester. The program is available in Catalan, Spanish and English. For information, connect to www.dairyfarm.es.
