The aim of this study was to perform two groups of standardized tests in on farm conditions to assess animal’s fear of humans in Pirenaica cattle, in order to show their usefulness for inclusion in a genetic evaluation scheme in the future. Three tests were conducted in a weighing crush (flight speed test, crush score test, chute score test) and another one in the feeding rack (avoidance distance test). A total of 83 cows and 230 calves of 12 farms were tested in the different procedures. Mean flight speed in pirenaica calves was 0.71±0.24m/s and was correlated with crush scores in calves and cows (R=0.46; p<0.001). Crush scores were correlated with exit scores (R=0.46 and 0.44, p<0.01, in calves and cows, respectively). Mean avoidance distance was 1.37±0.87m and 63% of cows could not be approached as closely as 1m. Farm showed an influence in crush and exit scores (p=0.01) that could be explained partially by sire effects. Crush score and avoidance distance tests were the more objective and easier to assess, with potential for inclusion in Pirenaica breeding programs.
