An obvious conclusion emerges if we pay close attention to the ongoing process of rapid extinction and to the global energy situation: the petro-modern cultural paradigm is incompatible with the ecological systems that regulate life on earth. Thus, the dominant cultural imaginaries that emerged out of the dominant cultural paradigm are obsolete and dysfunctional in the current socioecological context. This essay claims that Spanish cultural studies have helped to legitimate the petro-modern cultural logic by disseminating expressions and metaphors that contribute to minimize, ignore or invisibilize the pressing ecological and energy issues of the 21st century.
