In Latin the idea of verbal repetition is expressed mainly with the prefix re-, or with some adverbs, such as iterum or denuo. In Romance languages, the Latin system has been conserved mainly in French and oïl dialects and, with less forcefulness, in Italian, while expressing iterativity with adverbial locutions is the only usual resource in Romanian. In all Romance areas, except for French and Romanian, an iterative periphrasis was formed with tornar as a semantic nucleus of the repetitive value, which from the beginning offered the possibility of building tornar + inf. or tornar + a + inf., as happened with other constructions with a movement verb; in modern Romania there are areas with the first construction, areas with the second one and areas where both coexist, and this is the Catalan case. But in Catalan we do not have a simple coexistence of the two periphrasis as equivalents, but there is a semantic distinction between the two constructions.
