Narrative Cartographies. Developing a Socio-spatial Method of Graphic Analysis to Investigate Emergent Occupation Practices in Depopulated Rural Settlements: A Study-Case from the Spanish Central Pyrenees

Resumen
n the last decades more and more depopulated settlements in mountain rural areas in the Spanish Central Pyrenees have been reactivated. A big diversity of involved stakeholders and developed practices could be identified among these experiences, leading to a different transformation of the previously more uniform settlements. The recent reoccupation of formerly depopulated places indicates that they are still valuable, and provide certain conditions which allow their reuse. These recovered spaces may contribute to support the challenged local inhabitants of shrinking territories as well as newcomers.
This research paper presents a socio-spatial methodology developed to investigate this phenomenon. The “narrative cartographies” synthesize into graphic documents the gathered data from existing archives, field observations and interviews with local users.
These analytic graphic documents developed at different scales -territory, settlement, building-, provide a better understanding of the new practices of reoccupation developed: on the existing conditions in depopulated spaces which trigger their reuse; on the spatial adaptation which is required by the new function; and on the spatial impact and opportunities generated for (new) local communities.
