    From a government report written in 1957 in the north of Angola, this article reflects upon the transformations in the labor system in the Portuguese colonial context. Considering the high anticolonial pressure and local resistance, we present the laws and relations in the local administration of indigenous work which allows us to question the limits of free labor and the conditions for centrality of the State as a space of representation and agency that affect individuals and local groups, their senses of labor and political participation.

    A partir de um relatório de governo da região norte de Angola escrito em 1957 delineia-se, neste artigo, uma reflexão sobre as transformações na regulamentação do trabalho indígena no contexto colonial português. Em um cenário de forte pressão anti-colonial e resistências locais, as leis e o cotidiano de gestão do trabalho dos indígenas permitem tecer considerações sobre os limites do trabalho livre e as condições para a centralidade do Estado como espaço de representações e agências que afetam indivíduos e grupos locais, seus sentidos de trabalho e seu lugar de participação política.
