    Francia posee un rico patrimonio de tierra y una cultura constructiva que predomina en la región de Auvernia-Ródano-Alpes: el tapial. Redescubierto en la década de 1970, su potencial respuesta frente a desafíos contemporáneos derivó en diversas iniciativas de investigación aplicada que tomaron como base esta hipótesis. La construcción de un conjunto de 65 viviendas en 1984 fue un punto de partida. No obstante, hoy en día la rehabilitación del patrimonio de los siglos XIX y XX en Francia constituye el principal mercado de la construcción con tierra, mientras que los casos contemporáneos son aún la excepción. El dictado de normativas, reglas profesionales y controles de ejecución de obra restringen dichas posibilidades de desarrollo. Si bien algunos factores limitantes comienzan a ser abordados, queda pendiente atender la accesibilidad económica para la construcción con tierra, cuyos costes podrían ser aliviados con mayores esfuerzos en mecanización o prefabricación de elementos constructivos.

    France has a rich earthen architectural heritage with a major building culture: the pisé (rammed earth) in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This heritage was rediscovered in the 1970s, its potential response to contemporary challenges led to a number of initiatives based on this hypothesis. The construction of 65 flat housing in 1984 was a starting point. However, the market of earthen building construction in France is mainly focused on the reconversion of the enormous stock of traditional buildings dating back from the 19th and 20th centuries, while contemporary earthen architectural projects are still seen as an exception. New evolving norms and standards, as well as additional control measures, have been a brake for the development of this architecture. Nowadays some of them have started to be addressed, but the economic accessibility of building construction is still a pending issue, which costs can be reduced due the development of mechanization or prefabrication of constructive elements.
