The sustainability of the mountain livestock farms is limited by the available area ofmeadows and pastures, their altitudinal dispersion, their topography and the possibilitiesof irrigation. To analyze the relationship of these factors with the current size of the herdsof San Juan de Plan (Pyrenees of Huesca) we characterized all the farms (n = 12) and founda correlation with the private pastoral surface, with the orientation of the plots and theirrigation and a poor correlation with the rest of topographical factors. Three farms showa high level of optimization of the surface they have and the rest have the potential todiscretely increase their holdings.
