The first general aim of this paper is to give a brief introduction to the social and economic frame of the time, the nineteenth century in English literature, a time bringing further developments in every field. The second aim is to introduce the literary frame of the period, clearly different from that of the Restoration or the seventeenth century. Now a new genre, the novel, came into existence. Literature cannot be analized in isolation, since it needs to be related to social changes. The third and last aim is to give an account of the writer chosen, Jane Austen (1755-1817) due to her importance in the literary panorama of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, and her influence on the Literature of the twentieth century.
