Resumen de Intercultural Competence for International Teaching Assistants: Embracing Cultural Differences for an Improved Inclusive Undergraduate Student Learning Experience in Chemistry

Fabiana Cardetti, Manuela Wagner, Fatma Selampinar, Christian Brückner, Mark Peczuh

  • Intercultural competence (IC) training in the professional development of international graduate Teaching Assistants (ITAs) can pave the way for more inclusive chemistry classroom environments that allow all students access to opportunities and resources to learn chemistry. IC principles are laid out, including how they connect to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Respect (DEIR) issues. A specific example from our own practice in the Department of Chemistry at a medium-sized research-intensive Land Grant University is presented to illustrate how IC can be incorporated in the professional development of ITAs; anecdotal evidence from our observations and participants’ reflections are provided.
