    En el siguiente trabajo realizaremos una aproximación a las prácticas musicales del rabel en la región de Cantabria, las cuales han experimentado un interesante fenómeno de revival durante las últimas décadas. Entendemos por revival un movimiento musical y sociocultural en el que interactíían simultáneamente dos fuerzas, tradición e innovación. Trataremos acerca de la presencia y las motivaciones de este fenómeno, así como sus propiedades y las tendencias fundamentales. Analizaremos las diversas transformaciones que conlleva en múltiples aspectos que afectan, por una parte, a la construcción, la práctica interpretativa y al repertorio asociados a dicho instrumento; por otra parte, a la procedencia y la composición de sus intérpretes. Explicaremos también cómo las actuales prácticas interpretativas del rabel se manifiestan bajo renovadas ocasiones, usos y funciones en relación con aquellas prácticas consideradas tradicionales. Finalmente, indicamos la conveniencia de profundizar en la relación de este revival del rabel en Cantabria con procesos similares ocurridos en otras regiones españolas.

    In this paper, we seek to explore and gain closer insight into the musical practices of the rebec in the Cantabrian región of Spain. These practices have experienced an interesting phenomenon of «revival» in recent decades. We understand the term «revival» to mean a musical and sociocultural movement in which two torces, tradition and innovation, opérate simultaneously. We will deal with the presence and motivations as well as the properties and main tendencies of this phenomenon. We will analyse the diiferent transformations that this «revival» brings in múltiple aspects. On the one hand, these transformations affect the construction, performance practices and repertory of the rebec; and the origin and composition of the performers on the other. We will also explain the changes in the occasions, uses and functions of the new performance practices in comparison with the former ones considered to be traditional. Finally, we point out the applicability of this study to further exploration of a relationship between the revival of the rebec in Cantabria and similar processes occurring in other regions of Spain.
