    La alfabetización en salud es un concepto emergente y multidimensional que incide preferentemente en el núcleo de dos derechos fundamentales como son el derecho a la educación y el derecho a la salud. Desde el enfoque de los derechos humanos, considerando una visión positiva del envejecimiento, la alfabetización sanitaria se alinea con la idea de aprendizaje durante toda la vida, la construcción de una nueva ciudadanía, el empoderamiento de las personas mayores, su inclusión digital y la construcción de un marco jurídico que propicie y garantice el pleno disfrute de sus derechos y libertades.

    La complejidad del sistema de salud afecta negativamente la salud de las personas de edad avanzada con un nivel de alfabetización limitado, así como a su autonomía individual y se constituye en una cuestión de desigualdad y justicia en salud.

    Health literacy is an emerging and multidimensional concept that preferentially affects the core of two fundamental rights, such as the right to education and the right to health. From a human rights perspective approach, considering a positive vision of aging, health literacy is aligned with lifelong learning concept, the construction of a new citizenship, the empowerment of elderly people, their digital inclusion and the construction of a legal framework that encourages and guarantees the full enjoyment of their rights and freedoms. Complexity in health system negatively affects to health of elderly people with limited literacy, as well as it affects their individual autonomy and constitutes a problem of inequality and justice in health.
