    The fantasy novel American Gods (2001), by Neil Gaiman, proposes to articulate the extrarealistic elements that are typical of its genre to the portrayal of material reality. This articulation brings to the surface of the text tensions befitting the moment of its production - the turn of the millenium (inserted in the period critic Fredric Jameson refers to as “late capitalism”) - related to the fragmentation of historical perception and the complexification of financialized economic relations. The novel’s attempt to propose, amidst these tensions, a genealogy of the North American cultural formations, produces an innovative form through the combination of a collectivized narrative with metaphorical symbols - the gods on its title. This article will seek to analyze the construction of this form in the text, and what it reveals us about the political and ideological tensions of the present in the USA.

    O romance fantástico American Gods (2001), de Neil Gaiman, se propõe a articular os elementos extrarrealistas típicos do seu gênero em conjunção ao retrato da realidade material. Essa articulação traz à superfície do texto tensões próprias do momento da sua produção - a virada do milênio (inserida no período ao que o crítico Fredric Jameson se refere como “capitalismo tardio”) - relacionadas à fragmentação da percepção histórica e à complexificação das relações econômicas financeirizadas. A tentativa do romance de propor, em meio a essas tensões, uma genealogia das formações culturais norte-americanas, produz uma forma inovadora pela combinação de uma narrativa coletivizada com símbolos metafóricos - os deuses do seu título. O artigo buscará analisar a construção dessa forma no texto, e o que ela nos revela sobre as tensões políticas e ideológicas do presente nos EUA.
