The present work proposes a reading of “The Pursuer”, the nouvelle that opens Las armas secretas (1959) and represents a true milestone in the work of Julio Cortázar. Our approach focuses, first, on investigating the biblical inter-textuality present in the story and the Christological references associated with the protagonist, Johnny Carter. Second, we analyze the way in which Johnny’s figure is perceived / constructed through the perspective of Bruno, the witness narrator. Bruno himself equates his task to that of an evangelist (¿Qué clase de evangelista soy?) by placing a question of vast theological and literary reso-nance: how can one be a faithful witness?
