Randazzo between the Middle Age and the Renaissance and the Clarentano Palace Walter Leopold arrived in Randazzo in 1910 – the last stage of his study trip in search of the oppida lombardorumin Sicily. He discovered a town with widely diffused medieval characteristics. In his PhD thesis he dedicated four drawings to the civil constructions, representing the most significant buildings of the historical period.
The Finocchiaro palace, formerly Clarentano, certainly stood out among the others. An inscription on the stringcourse of the main façade indi- cates the date of foundation and its owner; Antonius Clarentano 1509. An evident similarity with Corvaja palace in Taormina, along with lin- guistic features which are strongly connected to late Gothic Sicilian culture prompted Leopold to describe it as a particularly beautiful example of civil architecture of the time.
Situated on the main street, near the church of San Nicola, the large building is like a rectangular block which stretches out into the nearby side street. The main façade is made up of refined, moderate architectural elements, unique in the urban context. At the first floor there is a simple low- ered arched portal with an archivolt supported by corbels and flanked by two architrave windows placed asymmetrically. On the second floor, there are three gothic arched windows with slender columns.
The harmonious façade is completed by still quite evident details such as two small lion heads at the corners of the façade and the family crest.
