His gravitation theory opposed to the theory by the great French philosopher René Descartes, as it implied a radically opposed approach to nature and conception of science. It was Voltaire who promulgated his work in France, mainly with his Éléments de la philosophie of Newton (1738), although it was possible thanks to the knowledge he acquired from the English scientist by means of his lover Madame du Châtelet, a who was translator from French of Newton’s Philosophiæ naturalis principia mathematica.
