In spite of the obvious advantages of using e-invoicing (speed, low operation costs, fewer administrative errors), only 6% of Spanish firms have adopted it. According to the European Union, to achieve a greater diffusion of e-invoicing, it is crucial that firms trust in it. Nevertheless, little is known about why firms trust in this new IT and how this trust influences their technological behavior. The aim of this paper is to shed light on the role of trust in the diffusion of e-invoicing in two ways. First, we examine the determinants which encourage the firm to trust in e-invoicing. Second, we analyze the consequences of trust in terms of performance and intentions of continuing to use e-invoicing. Our sample consists of 100 early adopter firms who have perceptions and knowledge about this IT.
The results obtained have managerial implications about trust-building structures that could improve the diffusion of e-invoicing.
