La tesis fundamental de este artículo es que conocer, enseñar y educar no significan lo mismo. Conocer un área cultural no es enseñar, porque el conocimiento puede estar separado de la acción y enseñar no es educar, porque podemos afirmar que hay enseñanzas que no educan, con fundamento en el significado propio de esos términos. En el trabajo se argumenta que la no distinción y la confusión tienen consecuencias negativas en la competencia profesional. Por el contrario, la distinción tiene efectos positivos en la identidad de los profesionales de la educación, en la función pedagógica y en las finalidades. La conclusión, desde la Pedagogía, es que, además de enseñar, hay que educar y, para ello, hay que desarrollar competencias adecuadas a las actividades comunes internas del educando.

Knowing, teaching and educating do not mean the same thing; this is the fundamental thesis of this article. Regarding to the specific meaning of these terms, knowing a cultural area is not to teach, because knowledge can be separated from the action and teaching is not to educate, because we can say that there are lessons that do not educate,.In this work it is argued that no distinction among this terms and the confusion among them have negative consequences on professional competence. On the contrary, to be able to distinguish them has positive effects on the identity of the education professionals, on the pedagogical function and about educational finalities and aims.From the Pedagogy, the conclusion is that in addition to teaching, it is necessary to educate, and to this end, we have to develop adjusted competencies from the educatees’ internal common activities
