This paper presents a general outline of classes of motion verbs in Spanish and considers their combinatorial possibilities, which contrast with other classifications that offer two clear-cut verb categories. This is especially interesting for language teaching from the viewpoint of contrastive linguistics because of the different characteristics of motion verbs in Germanic languages like English and German. Important differences are shown in three particular areas: systematicity of possible combinations, frequency of commonly available constructions and the semantic contribution of the constructions in which these verbs are included.
