Resumen
The lack of wholly grammaticalized articles and determiners in Latin and the appearance of these in all Romance languages has given rise to many interesting contrasts in the way nominal determination works. This paper examines one of them: the differing patterns of the occurrence of the possessive and the article in Spanish (mi casa / la casa mía) and Galician (a miña casa / a casa miña). This contrast reveals differences in the theoretical status of possessives in the two languages. In the case of Galician it also poses a problem for grammar teachers who are asked to give an explanation for apparently anomalous and sporadic cases of the absence of the definite article with possessives (such as miña casa) in a language where the possessive does not take on a determining function.
