    En el presente artículo se hace un análisis de las primeras traducciones y adaptaciones al inglés de Pepita Jiménez, la obra principal del escritor decimonónico Juan Valera y una de las novelas costumbristas más destacadas del siglo XIX. Se realiza un análisis del proceso de traducción, tanto de las ediciones norteamericanas como de la británica, estudiando las similitudes y diferencias en cuanto al diseño y estructura de la obra que, en ese tiempo estuvieron supervisadas por el autor, uno de los primeros novelistas españoles en negociar su proyección en el potente mercado editorial de los países anglófonos.

    This article analyses the first English translations and adaptations of the work by Spanish writer Juan Valera: Pepita Jiménez, which is one of the most prominent costumbrista novels in the 19th century. It studies the translation process in both the North-American and the British editions, examining similarities and differences not only in layout and structure but also in the target text. The author himself supervised the editing process in some cases, making him one of the first Spanish writers to negotiate his own projection in the English-speaking publishing market.
