Two workshops on the Keller Plan (PSI) which were run in 1974 and 1975 are described and the evaluation results are reported. The aim of the workshops was to present an account of the principles and practice of Keller Plan courses and to provide an opportunity to write a sample unit. In 1974 the forty‐seven participants came from mathematics, science and engineering departments in Higher Education institutes and in 1975 the twenty‐six participants were all physicists.
The 1974 workshop was run as a Keller Plan on the Keller Plan and contained five “units” (three with tests), a seminar and two discussion periods. The scheme was found to be inappropriate for a workshop lasting two and a half days. In the 1975 workshop only one Keller Plan unit (with test) was used; more time was devoted to group discussion, workshop exercises and a panel of speakers presented short accounts of their experience with Keller Plan and some variants. The evaluation showed the workshop was more satisfactory for the participants in 1975 than in 1974. This is probably due to both the change in style and revision of materials for the 1975 workshop and also because the 1975 participants were from a single subject (physics). It is planned to run a workshop in 1976 for a group with mixed subject backgrounds, as in 1974. This will provide further information about the value of the change made for 1975.
