La nómina de obispos que han dejado huella de su paso por la Mezquita- catedral de Córdoba es realmente importante, pero sin duda una de las obras de mayor impacto visual y carga simbólica, hasta el traslado de la capilla mayor en 1607, fue la realizada bajo don Íñigo Manrique (1486-1496), protegido de los Reyes Católicos. Derribó parte de las primitivas naves de al-Hakam II para levantar una gran nave ante la capilla de Villaviciosa, introduciendo un lenguaje formal de innegable sello cristiano y filiación gótica. Para dar esplendor a la liturgia, dotó el altar de un magnífico frontal bordado y encargó, entre otras piezas, una espléndida cruz procesional. Su patrocinio alcanzó a otros templos de Córdoba y su provincia, donde su escudo nobiliario puso rúbrica a sus actuaciones.
Among all the great modifications that numerous bishops carried out until the transfer of the main chapel of the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba in 1607, the best known for its major visual impact and its symbolism is the one executed by the Catholic Kings’ protégé Don Iñigo Manrique (1486-1496). In order to build a grand nave facing the chapel of Villaviciosa, he partly demolished some of the original ones from Al-Hakam II. This new space was characterized by having novel and formal Christian features as well as by a gothic affiliation. To highlight the greatness of the liturgy, the altar was dressed with a magnificent embroidered front and with a splendid processional cross that he specially commissioned. Therefore, his work had an influence on numerous temples in Cordoba and its province where his coat of arms marks his interventions.
